What is an AI companion? A plain-English guide for 2026
What is an AI companion? How it works (LLM, memory, voice, images), who uses one, the market in numbers, benefits, limits and why adults-only matters

What is an AI companion? A software character you talk to as if it were a person: it has a name, a personality and a memory, and it replies in text, voice and sometimes photos or video. Unlike a general assistant, it is built for a relationship rather than a task. Millions of adults use one for conversation, flirting, support or romance, and the market has grown from a niche into a category with hundreds of apps. This guide explains what an AI companion is, how it works under the hood, who uses one, what it can and can't do, and why the adult side of the category needs real age verification.
What is an AI companion, exactly?
The simplest definition: a persistent, personalised conversational character. Three words carry the weight.
Persistent means the character continues between sessions. You close the app on Tuesday and reopen it on Friday, and it is the same character with the same history. That is the difference between a companion and a chatbot you consult once.
Personalised means it adapts to you. It remembers your name, your job, your sense of humour, what you told it last week. Over time it becomes less generic and more yours.
Character means it has a defined identity: a name, an age (always adult on a legitimate platform), a personality, a way of speaking, often a face and a voice. On Bunny Tease, for example, each of the twenty launch models has a public book with a bio and photos, so you know who you are talking to before the first message.
The category covers a spectrum. At one end are supportive friends and mentors (Replika calls itself "the AI to do life with"). In the middle is roleplay and entertainment with user-created characters (Character AI, Janitor AI). At the other end are romantic and adult companions, often called AI girlfriends, for verified adults.
How an AI companion works
Under the hood, four systems combine. You don't need to understand them to use an app, but understanding them tells you what to expect.
The language model. Every reply is generated by a large language model (LLM), the same class of technology behind general assistants. The platform gives the model the character's personality and your recent conversation, and the model writes the next message in character. Some platforms run their own models; others, like Janitor AI, let you connect a third-party model with your own API key. The quality of the model determines how coherent, witty and consistent the character feels.
Memory. The model's working memory (its context window) holds only the recent conversation. To remember you across weeks, the platform extracts facts and stores them separately, then feeds the relevant ones back before each reply. This is where apps differ most. Nomi and Kindroid sell memory depth as their main feature. Bunny Tease makes memory visible: a Memory panel shows what each model remembers, and you can erase any memory or all of them.
Voice. Text-to-speech gives the character a voice for voice messages and, on some platforms, live calls. Nomi, Replika, Candy AI, Kindroid and Bunny Tease all offer voice in some form.
Image and video generation. Diffusion models generate photos of the character on request, and short video clips on the more advanced platforms. Generation takes time and compute, which is why it is usually metered in tokens or credits. On Bunny Tease a photo takes about 20 seconds and a clip about a minute, and any generation that is billed but not delivered returns its tokens.
A fifth element, proactive messaging, is becoming standard: the companion writes first. Done well, it's what makes the relationship feel alive. Done badly, it's spam. Bunny Tease offers three frequencies, quiet hours from 10 pm to 8 am, and never interrupts an active conversation.
Who uses AI companions, in numbers
The market is larger and younger than most people assume.
- Consumer spend. According to TechCrunch citing Appfigures (August 2025), AI companion apps made $82 million in the first half of 2025, up 64 percent year on year, and were on track for more than $120 million for the year. Lifetime consumer spend reached $221 million and 220 million downloads by July 2025, across 337 revenue-generating apps, 128 of which launched in 2025.
- Concentration. The same report found the top 10 percent of apps take 89 percent of revenue, and that 17 percent of apps carry "girlfriend" in the name against 4 percent for "boyfriend".
- Market size. The Business Research Company puts the consumer AI companion app market at $4.24 billion in 2025, $5.01 billion in 2026 and $9.65 billion by 2030 (February 2026). Fortune Business Insights, using a much broader definition that includes enterprise uses, estimates $37.73 billion in 2025 rising to $49.52 billion in 2026 (updated August 2026); the two figures differ by an order of magnitude because the definitions do.
- Traffic. Character AI drew 159.7 million visits over three months with an average visit of nearly 16 minutes; Janitor AI 142 million with 17:45 (Similarweb, August 2026). Replika claims over 42 million users. Chai reports more than a million daily active users and a $100 million annual revenue run rate (press release via Yahoo Finance, July 2026).
- Teens. More than 70 percent of teens have used AI companions and half use them regularly, according to Common Sense Media research cited by Euronews (October 2025). This is why age policy matters so much.
The benefits people report
- Conversation on your terms. Available at 3 am, never tired, never judging.
- Continuity. A companion with good memory follows the thread of your life in a way few apps do.
- A safe space for flirting and romance. For adults, a fictional partner to be playful with, without stakes.
- Practice. Some people use companions to rehearse conversations or rebuild confidence after a hard period.
- Company. For people who live alone or work odd hours, a daily check-in matters.
The limits you should know
- It is not a person. The character is fiction generated by a model. It has no needs, no life outside the app, and its affection is a design choice, not a feeling.
- It is not therapy. A companion can listen and encourage. It cannot diagnose, treat or replace a professional, and reputable apps say so.
- Memory is imperfect. Even the best systems forget or misremember; that's why readable memory matters.
- It costs money. Media generation is metered on most platforms, and the total can exceed the headline subscription. Read the pricing page carefully.
- Dependence is possible. As with any engaging product, some people over-use it. Quiet hours and notification limits are a sign a platform takes that seriously.
Safety and the adults-only line
Two safety questions decide whether a companion platform is trustworthy.
Is it honest about content? Platforms for general audiences, like Character AI, filter romance and adult content and barred under-18s from open-ended chat on November 25, 2025 after lawsuits. Adult platforms should say plainly that they are for adults and enforce it.
Does it verify age? A birthday field is not verification. Italy's data protection authority fined Replika's maker EUR 5 million in April 2025 for lacking a legal basis for processing and effective age verification. On Bunny Tease, anyone can chat as a guest without an account, but that chat stays non-explicit; adult content unlocks only after an independent age verification. That split (open, non-explicit trial; verified adults for the adult register) is the model the regulators are pushing the category toward.
Privacy follows from the same logic. A companion knows a lot about you. Look for neutral notifications, an app lock, and export and deletion of your data from a single screen, all of which Bunny Tease provides. The help center explains each.
FAQ
Is an AI companion the same as an AI girlfriend?
An AI girlfriend is one kind of AI companion: a romantic, usually adult, female character. AI companions also include friends, mentors, roleplay characters and supportive assistants. Most apps fall clearly on one side; Nomi is one of the few that lets you choose friend, partner or mentor for the same character.
Do AI companions really remember you?
Yes, to varying degrees. Working memory covers the recent chat; long-term memory stores facts about you across sessions. Depth and reliability vary by app and often by pricing tier. The clearest way to know is a memory list you can read, which Bunny Tease provides and most others don't document.
Are AI companions safe?
The reputable ones are, for adults who understand what they are. Choose platforms that state their content policy plainly, verify age before adult content, protect your data and let you delete it, and limit notifications. Avoid any that market adult content without age verification.
How much does an AI companion cost?
Base subscriptions across the category run from about $6 to $20 a month, with tokens or credits for photos, voice and video often on top. Free tiers exist with caps. Bunny Tease's plans and token prices are on /pricing; we don't quote them in articles.
Where to start
If you want to see what a companion is like before reading another word, try one. On Bunny Tease you can open a conversation with a model like Anouk Vermeulen as a guest at /start, with no account and no card. Tell her three things about your day, then open the Memory panel and see what she kept. That single test will teach you more about the category than any definition.
Bunny Tease is reserved for verified adults (18+).
